Gerry Howell’s Incubation Hour
Underbelly
Gerry Howell’s Incubation Hour is a strange one. I was thoroughly entertained and intrigued, but I never really belly-laughed. His style is one which invites comparison to Eddie Izzard. Rather than having structured jokes, he rambles about various thoughts he’s had, with the humour coming from the ridiculousness. His musings can be downright surreal – with him discussing, at great length, an egg. This is a risky strategy which leaves some of the audience behind. However, at other times, it pays off wonderfully.
There’s a lot about Gerry Howell to like. His random mumblings when not so funny are endearing, and when he gets them right, they are hilarious. It’s a worthwhile show which provides an hour of harmless chortles and guffaws, but nothing that’ll change the world.
