Reginald D Hunter: The Only Apple in the Garden of Eden and Niggas
Underbelly

Reggie is a laid back comedian with a cheeky grin, which doesn’t entirely disguise the edgy routine that he peddles to this grateful capacity audience.

His material is often based on jokes that build to a punch line that, when delivered, goes somewhere quite unexpected. For example, he explains, at length, why he isn’t gay. Using the stereotypical language of a regular straight male comedian, he confides that he likes men, but the thought of gay sex has always repelled him. “…but then,” he concludes, “I didn’t used to like broccoli either.”

This device is also used deftly to discus swearing, sex, women and race. This is self deprecating observational humour disguised as attack. He was described once as a black Bernhard Manning. This is preposterous. Hunter is much more intelligent and infinitely funnier. Where as Manning’s gigs could turn into BNP style rallies of hate, Hunter simply wants everyone to get along. I’d certainly be more than happy to go for a beer and a smoke with him.
