The Timekeepers
Sweet Grassmarket
Israeli theatre company Ocean Of Sugar have toured this play across their own country to great acclaim.
It concerns a pair of watch menders: Hans, a pink-triangle-wearing German homosexual, and Benjamin, a yellow-star-adorned elderly Jew – thrown together into the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. As you might imagine, the two have little in common. Benjamin initially rejects Hans’ advances of friendship, but over time they begin to work together and finally support each other.
The key to their friendship is resistance to the common enemy, represented by a green-starred German criminal, who is given authority by the Nazis to subjugate the watchmakers.
This is familiar territory: two rival protagonists eventually becoming friends as they combat a common enemy. However, this is an old story told very well, with a strong script and three quality actors. Well worth an hour of your time.
